If you are inclined towards medicine and are interested in dental care, you can consider a career in dentistry. The work of a dentist is not an easy one. The dentist takes care of teeth, gums and related tissues. He or she sees to it that your teeth are well maintained. They have to ensure that there is no infection, bleeding etc. They also have to advice you on how to take care of your teeth.
The dentist can also perform minor dental surgeries. There are specialized dental surgeons for oral surgeries. It is up to the dentist to detect any signs of problem in your mouth. He or she examines your mouth to see if there is any chance of infection. A dentist can also detect other problems like a problem with the root or if the teeth is growing as it should. Most adults have problems with their wisdom teeth and dentists have to monitor their growth to see that they do not create complications. Root canal, cleaning, bleaching etc are common procedures done by a dentist.
Being a dentist is as tough as becoming a doctor in any other specialization, if not more. As a dentist you will have to keep abreast with the latest developments in your field, constantly interact with others in your field to improve your knowledge base and will have to know to use the latest equipments in your field. There is no end to your studying and if you are not really interested in this field, it would be better not to opt to become a dentist.
As a dentist you might have comparatively more regular hours than other doctors in other fields of medicine. This is because there are rarely many medical emergencies related to dentistry. The dentist does earn handsomely and this could be a factor that could prove helpful, however money itself should never be your motive. If you want you can also specialize in a specific field as a dentist. You could become a pediatric dentist or a cosmetic dentist etc.
A dentist should have certain other skills apart from being good at medicine. He or she has to have a good eye for details, a sharp sight, an acute sense of cleanliness and a decent aesthetic sense. The dentist should also have a pleasant personality and be people friendly. Most machinery associated with dentistry make people scared and you should be able to put them at ease.
If you want to become a dentist you should start from your school days. Focus on subjects like biology, chemistry and physics. Read as much as you can. Plan on the bachelor’s degree- you can go for an institution where you could attend a pre-dentistry program. You would then have to clear an entrance exam and attend a dental school. After this you have to obtain the license to practice from the state where you intend to set up your career. You could work under someone for a few years and once you have gained experience, you can start your own practice.
