Do You Blog Like A Tortoise Or Hare?
- January 20th, 2009
I’ve been debating a blogging question for quite some time now and can’t seem to come to a definitive answer. I would have to believe that many of you have asked yourself the same question and come to your own conclusions, so perhaps you can share your outlook with me and others. Is it better to post on your blog every day or with less frequency such as once a week?
It was just yesterday in my Blog Mistakes Monday article that I described how neglecting your blog can have negative effects on your site. Here I am a day later questioning what “neglecting your blog” really means. Typically I update my blogs everyday with fresh content and new ideas. I do this for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that I simply enjoy sharing my opinion and experiences with others, and the second reason is because I feel that it keeps readers coming back to the site frequently. Often times I wonder if this is too often of an update. Much like the Hare sprinting to the finish.
There are many popular and successful blogs that update much less often then daily, those are the Tortoise’s. Slow and steady to win the race. Some update weekly and some even monthly. The content on these sites typically are very in depth and the articles do tend to be more lengthy, but it still amazes me how they can generate tremendous buzz. Perhaps writing less frequently gives people more of an opportunity to read articles without falling behind and also allows more time for commenting.
Even as I finishing writing this article I’m torn between the pro’s and con’s of each blogging strategy. I guess for me the tipping point is interaction with my readers. I enjoy writing daily because it allows me to engage with people on a more frequent basis.
How about you, do you blog like a Tortise or a Hare?

I personally blog daily – I have been thinking about decreasing my posting to only one a day, but I would rather include the fun posts that I do such as my humor posts, or funny videos

You know, I realized, that I have to manage my time better. I cannot rush a post just to maintain a flow of traffic. I have a lot more to say and information to share. Now, thinking about it further, having a blogging (writing jam) on the weekend for schedule post make a lost more sense for me

Okay, blogging everyday can be a tough thing to accomplish if you have a limited amount of time to devote to your blogging efforts.
I’ve been blogging on my first blog, fanboy@50 for almost two years now, and I have found that fanboy has become established enough where I actually do not have to post on that particular blog everyday. I usually have a new post on fanboy at least every two to three days. I actually did my last post there this past Saturday evening.
I tend to be more of a ” Blogging Tortoise ” as far as posting frequency, but I will say that my political blog is where I pretty much have to post something pretty much daily…if I’m able.

I think it all depends on your content, desired audience, and purpose. For instance, my blog is designed to be a how-to type of thing. Projects take time and if I posted the next step the next day instead of weekly, it would just overwhelm everyone. There simply isn’t enough time to complete a specific task in a day.
That said, I do try and put a short update type of post throughout the week to keep the motivation and encouragement going and to put the site and project back on the minds of the readers. Sites can easily be forgotten in a short time period.
A friend posts on a blog monthly and every month I hear him say – oh crudola, I have to create a post for tomorrow. The time just sneaks up on him even though it is only once a month.
I think it also depends on the types of comments you are receiving. More comments could keep a discussion longer that a day or two.

There’s a place for both the tortoise and the hare bloggers since they provide different quality posts. I would even go so far to say that the analogy should not imply that the hare loses over the tortoise blogger.
I am both. I have seen results from holding out on posting, as well as, posting many times per day. I guess it really depends on when the readers want to read

It is funny how different the blogosphere can be yet how similar it can be. I just ran a poll about “too much or not enough” in regards to posting frequency. The answer was “it depends” . As I said in your last post, I am experimenting but it’s only been a few weeks.
