The economy is in tough shape and it seems that each day we wake up in the morning to some new bailout hitting the headlines. With the recent wave of job loss, the search for a recession proof job has become very popular. As many of my readers know, I recently quit my corporate job about 4 months ago to pursue blogging on a full time basis. I chose blogging for multiple reasons, one of which was to become my own boss. Today I asked myself if blogging is recession proof?
Recently the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) released numbers that pertain to advertising dollars spent on Internet advertising. The numbers were mind boggling. Despite the recession and economic slowdown, advertisers spent an enormous amount of money buying ads online. In the 3rd Quarter alone, $5.9 billion dollars was shelled out by companies looking to make a presence online. This was an 11% increase over the same period last year. In one of my recent articles “Why I Don’t Sleep: Blogging For Money Isn’t Rocket Science”, I highlight how exciting, fun, and financially rewarding making money blogging can be. If these stats provided by the IAB aren’t enough to keep you from getting a wink of shut eye then I don’t know what would. Blogging offers a great medium to express your views, help others, meet new people, and make money online. I have yet to meet anyone that has been fired from their own blog.
While there is no doubt that the economy is headed into a deep recession, it appears that online advertising still has a tremendous amount of growth potential and retailers are allocating more of their budget to this form of media. Combine the income opportunities that come with a blogging career and the prospects of a recession proof job, it’s no wonder the popularity of the growing blogoshpere.
What do you think, is blogging recession proof?
