Find A Recession Proof Job In Blogging

  • by Rachel

The economy is in tough shape and it seems that each day we wake up in the morning to some new bailout hitting the headlines.  With the recent wave of job loss, the search for a recession proof job has become very popular.  As many of my readers know, I recently quit my corporate job about 4 months ago to pursue blogging on a full time basis. I chose blogging for multiple reasons, one of which was to become my own boss.  Today I asked myself if blogging is recession proof?

Recently the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) released numbers that pertain to advertising dollars spent on Internet advertising.  The numbers were mind boggling.  Despite the recession and economic slowdown, advertisers spent an enormous amount of money buying ads online.  In the 3rd Quarter alone, $5.9 billion dollars was shelled out by companies looking to make a presence online.  This was an 11% increase over the same period last year.  In one of my recent articles “Why I Don’t Sleep: Blogging For Money Isn’t Rocket Science”, I highlight how exciting, fun, and financially rewarding making money blogging can be.  If these stats provided by the IAB aren’t enough to keep you from getting a wink of shut eye then I don’t know what would.  Blogging offers a great medium to express your views, help others, meet new people, and make money online.  I have yet to meet anyone that has been fired from their own blog.

While there is no doubt that the economy is headed into a deep recession, it appears that online advertising still has a tremendous amount of growth potential and retailers are allocating more of their budget to this form of media.  Combine the income opportunities that come with a blogging career and the prospects of a recession proof job, it’s no wonder the popularity of the growing blogoshpere.
What do you think, is blogging recession proof?

I don’t now if we have hit a real economic downturn since the advent of the Internet. Post 9/11 is the closest we have come. But I am talking late 70’s/early 80’s kind of serious hurt. Double digit unemployment. Heavy inflation. So, we are a bit in unchartered waters as affiliate marketers. However, my feeling is people will rely on the Internet all the more, as it is cheaper than other options for work, entertainment, education, etc. Where the people are, so will be the advertising dollars.

Hi Rachel,
I found you through a comment on john chow’s website. Well my passion towards reading everything on a blog found a friend in you. Well i was more concerned of the online market because of the slow down in the offline markets round the world. Every sector is hit hard with the slowdown. You are very true the jobs are almost 50% cut now. Leaving the corporate job is really a brave decision and i wish you all the very best in the online markets. Its been a month or so that i posted on my blog (because of the pressures in my office), i am also planning to do the same which you have done (leaving corporate job) but accumulating strength for that very step.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Blogging and having serveral blogs also helps. Keeping up with trends and setting ones. If you have the money set aside, go for it. :)

I love blogging and internet marketing for this reason. I mean my online income has increase the last couple of months even with the current economic conditions!

Well said!! I myself started up blogging as I saw my other business ventures getting hit by the current recession. Since June, sales have been taking a hit of 30% each month!! I’m currently down about 70% from my June high. I love helping others, and I hope to give my readers some good advice from my own personal experiences in the coming months to keep them coming back and increasing readership. Good luck to you and your blog, and check mine out if you’re in the area :D

Online advertising has tremendous growth potential because of how cheap it is compared to other mediums. At this point, even if you’re working full-time, you should be blogging. You should be writing what you love and getting it out there. Sure, you may not make money right away, but it’s much more productive than watching TV or the news about the recession.

People need to take control of their life and they will be successful. And, I must say, blogging is the answer.

I don’t know very much about advertising but I’m assuming it’s cheaper to purchase it online that in other mediums, right? If that’s the case, it would make sense that advertisers would put more money into less expensive areas.

I don’t think anything is recession proof though.

@Money Money Money:
Blogging is definitely not easy – if it was, everyone would be a John Chow
