Leave The Blog Juggling To The Circus
- January 5th, 2009
As part of the ongoing Blog Mistake Monday’s series it’s time again to evaluate what won’t make you a successful blogger. Last week we took a look at spending too much time sweating over your blogs theme thanks to a guest post by David of The Three Dog Blog. Today I’d like to touch on juggling and focus.
Almost everyday I come up with 5 new market niches I’d like to start blogging about. I’m not purposely brainstorming for new sites to launch, however I can’t help but apply my blog business model to everyday life. As an example, I’ll be taking the kids to school and I’ll notice something that would make for a great blog topic; be it a funny license plate or a random person wearing a ridiculous outfit. I’ll think to myself, hey that would make for a fun topic to write about. The next thing you know, I’ve got a list 100 ideas long and all of them are screaming “Launch Me”! Despite all of my enthusiasm, I resist and put them on hold.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make when starting a new blog venture or any start-up business is spreading yourself to thin. It’s extremely important to give your blog 100% of your time especially in the early years. Pick a topic you enjoy and run with it. Don’t try to juggle 10 new sites at once, especially if you’re the only person running the blog business. Right now I run and manage 3 blogs and it’s a handful. Between marketing, posting, and updating I’m running pretty hard. It’s a good thing I love it!
For now I’m going to have to let the list of potential new blogs sit ideal. I’m more then certain that if I try and juggle more then 3 blogs, my content quality will suffer and as a result all the blogs will fall short of my expectations for success.
Do you juggle more then 1 blog right now? If so how many and what’s your opinion of focusing your time?
FYI: If you have a guest post you’d like to share about a blog mistake, please email me: rachel @ averagegal dot com.

i have 2 blogs right now and plan to start one more….having more than 1 blog depends on how much time u have and how much time is needed for each blog
It is definitely a good idea to expand, but you’re right – spread too thin and you’re going to lose out!!
I personally have just been adding good ideas to my one blog. Whether or not it pays off is yet to be determined

Rachel, you must be reading my mind! I see potential posts everwhere, but they don’t match my niche. I’m currently running 2 blogs of my own and 2 clients blogs. I bought another one in Nov for my wife, but she has no interest in it, so its calling to me constantly, but I just haven’t got the time. All thins and I still have a full time job and 2 kids, I think us women bloggers rock!

Hi Rachel
I started BloggerNewbie for blogging beginners then started another one with positive thinking type posts. While I have plenty of ideas for both blogs I just can’t keep up with all the demands running a blog requires so I throw in some positive thinking posts once in a while to motivate people (hopefully)! If I could blog full time I would have a few!

I use to have 4 blogs. Sold them all due to the lack of time. Now my main focus is to my one remain blog (my baby lol). I would love to run more than one but I just haven’t got the time.

I have more websites than I know what to do with. It’s one thing to start too many websites and lose a lot of money. It’s another thing to start a lot of sites and just lose time. Which is what I have successfully done.
I also think it’s important to stay in one field of sites and perfect it. For example, don’t start a social network if you’ve only been blogging for 3 years!

I have several project on going. Inspiration for new blogs are everywhere. I intend to start the later this year. In the meantime, what I do is purchase the site name. That would be my deposit
I have been thinking about starting another blog.
I am still undecidedas I don’t want the quality to slip. It’s a lot of hard work to maintain high quality posts and work on links etc.

Agree 100%. This year I have vowed to devote more of my time to each of my blogs. It looks so much better when the content is well thought of.

I doubt we should pile ourselves with too many blogs at once. Focus is the keypoint in success.

Depending on your objective, too many blogs at a time might even do more harm than good. Good luck!
