Letting Your Blog Drift Into The Sunset
- January 19th, 2009
Why are weekends so short? Each day seems to be flying past quicker then the next and here we are again at another edition of “Blog Mistake Monday’s”. Each week I try to highlight common themes that will make you unsuccessful at blogging. I’m always open to sharing a guest post on this topic, so feel free to contact me with your post. This week I want to highlight blog neglect.
Over the past couple of months I’ve experienced some tremendous growth throughout the blogosphere. My new readership has grown very rapidly and there’s been a great group of people leaving insightful comments on the sites. I don’t say this to “brag” or sound boastful, but more so to solidify a point. The point being, successful blogging takes consistent commitment and dedication to your site. I’m living proof that doing that and neglecting a site, even for only a couple of days can slow your sites buzz down very quickly.
I’ve missed a couple of days worth of posts on a few of my blogs, including this one, and the comments and traffic fell quickly. While I don’t think that missing a couple of days is going to dramaticly impact my blogs over the long haul, it’s still a point worth noting. Neglecting a blog is like neglecting a plant, if you go long enough without “feeding it” with fresh content it will eventually wilt and shrivle up!
I’m curious, have you ever neglected your blog to the point of wilting?

Hi Rachel
As I’m sure you’ve come to realize, being responsible for more than one blog can become very tiring and time consuming, and more so if you happen to work full time also, so it’s really not that hard to let a blog ” ” wilt ” when you start to need to take a break from it all. I do agree with your point, and I have noticed this has happened on three of my four blogs as far as traffic to the blogs in general goes…but I do have my one blog, which seems to be established at this point and seems to generate steady traffic ( although not as much as I would like all of the time ) even when I’m only posting on it maybe two to three times a week at best. This is my ” Fanboy@50 ” blog and it was my first, and I’ve been blogging there for almost two years now, trying to really focus on narrowing down subject matter on it. Unfortunatley, sometimes it becomes a necessity to take a break from writing posts and just go about the business of living. I think that this is healthy as sometimes you can start to become stagnant as far as how your posts are written, and how your point(s) come across to your readers. .

Rachel,
I’ve come close, at least if I look at my analytics graph. I do think that the care and feeding of the blog is constant. In fact I’m amazed by how quickly things drop.
I’ve determined that blogging is one of the most mysterious and difficult things I’ve ever done.

I can totally relate. I have been working on my websites and have several other blogs, and the weekends are short, but so are the weekdays lol……
I am now working on large amount of post during the weekend and will have them schedules to post automatically. I have also noticed that weekends are slow for blog traffic and today. I am pretty sure everyone is watching the Inauguration or celebrating.

Hi Laura-Whateverebay.
Funny you should mention the Inauguration of Obama, as I’m blogging on my political blog at the moment, linking to a few blogs that have been less than kind to our new president.
And I do agree with you as far as the weekends just being way too short. Sometimes it becomes hard to blog on the weekends when you’ve been working all week and would like some ” Me Time “, but if you want to succeed and become a top notch blogger, sometimes you just have to sacrifice that ” Me Time ” for ” Your Own Greater Good “.

It really depends on why you are blogging really. If you just blog for yourself, then you should not get pressured to write for other people. Your time is your own and you have to use it to do things for yourself first.
Rachel:
I’ve been experimenting with my posting frequency and traffic does take a dive on days I don’t post. I want to look at the stats a bit before I make a judgment.

Lew – I could not agree with you more. Dedication is key, and definitely getting organized. Sure the weekends are short as are those week days but the rewards will sure follow.
Congratulations to our First Family!! Welcome – I know they are reading your blog

Laura-Whateverebay, I want to thank you for the kind words. I will tell you that over the past day, I have noticed a bit of a boost for my political blog, plus I was able to do a bit of blogging early this morning before heading out the door to work.
Not going to work this evening thou, as I got home from work, a doctor’s appointment and some grocery shopping real late and having a late dinner to boot, so it’s going to be some ” Me Time ” this evening.
