Mobile Blogging – Tips, Reviews, Advice
- December 16th, 2008
One of the greatest benefits of being a full time blogger is the freedom of owning your own business. With that freedom comes a huge corporate perk, freedom of schedule. With the holiday season in full swing, I’ve found that not being tied down to a company desk has allowed me to travel more frequently and visit family. With all of this travel I’ve found myself struggling with mobile blogging. I’ve come up with a few tips and reviews, but would love to hear some advice on how you perform mobile blogging.
As it stands right now, I usually lug my 4 year old Dell Laptop around when I travel. I swear the thing weighs about 15 pounds! Many times when my family and I are heading out of town, I type up a post while we’re driving. You’d be amazed at how good I’ve gotten at holding a laptop on my lap while typing and watching the road at the same time! I’m only joking….my husband drives 99.9% of the time and I never type while driving, only from the passenger seat (I highly recommend you never type and drive!). I can usually get 2-3 good posts written on a 2.5 hour drive, while the girls holler from the back asking if we are at Grandma’s yet. It may be a little old school, but this is one way that I do my mobile blogging.
I’d like to get a little more up-to-speed with technology and get a new laptop or PDA. Keep in mind I have Sprint cell phone service. Here are the options I’m currently looking at and would love to hear your tips or advice on them.
- Netbook - I’m currently debating if I should buy a new laptop or go for one of the new Netbooks that I keep reading about. For those of you that don’t know what a Netbook is, don’t feel alone. You can see the one I’m looking at from Amazon Here. If you have any feedback on using this Netbook and/or the benefits versus a laptop please let me and others know below.
- Smart Phone – I really like the idea of a smart phone because of the small size and wireless capabilities, however I’m concerned that it won’t offer enough functionality. I would think it must be pretty difficult to type a full blog post from a Smart Phone. Please correct me if I’m wrong. I’ve looked at a bunch of Smart Phones, but I’ve narrowed it down to this Samsung. Again please share your experience with mobile blogging from this Smart Phone or others like it.
I’d like to make life a little more simple by streamlining the whole remote blogging process. While the routine I have now of simply grabbing some wireless internet from my old laptop works, I think there’s a better way.
Please share your experience with mobile blogging as I’m sure others would love to hear it!

We bloggers must all be virtually connected or something, Every other day I write a post about a similar subject as some of my favorite bloggers. I think my take on mobile blogging might be a little different than yours.
In all honesty, I think your best best is to get a smartphone. I’ve got an Iphone 3g and its really like a computer that you can take anywhere, to do whatever you need to do online! Just the size of the netbook makes it somewhat cumbersome to lug around, while a smartphone is truly portable, as you can stick it in your pocket or purse and take it anywhere, and do anything.
and yes, this is me plugging the Iphone 3g lol – I wrote a review of it on my blog if you wanna check it out!~!
How difficult is it to post a full blog article with the Iphone? To me it seems that typing out a full length post would be somewhat cumbersome.
I have seen (been lusting for) a Netbook which runs about what $350? I was just at Staples yesterday buying a new mouse for my old laptop and saw both Acer and HP had models out that outperform my old full-size laptop (which cost me more than these new Netbooks). A Smartphone would be wonderful but there are additional cost considerations. Not only do they run as much or more than a Netbook, but then you will have significant monthly fees for services, bells, and whistles. My advice, get the Netbook now, then use a Smartphone as a delayed gratification goal for yourself. Such as when you have three consecutive months of affiliate income to pay for the monthly Smartphone fees.
Thanks for the tips….it’s amazing how much power these little Netbooks have. They have more memory and a quicker processor then my current laptop and cost about half as much!
I am not a full time blogger and have never done mobile Blogging!
Wow, you are amazing! If I try to do any serious writing/typing in a vehicle for an hour, I find that I start feeling drained out in my brain. Still, it will be fun and efficient to be able to blog while hitting the road – commuting time does add up to be quite a significant chunk over time. I haven’t tried mobile blogging before because I don’t have the necessary phone. I’m buying a new phone soon; will keep this in mind!
I would suggest you get a new lappy. There are so many more things you can do with one.
@Rachel:
It’s definitely not something I would want to be writing full posts on, but just to put in comments etc it is more than adequate.
For me, I just personally hate lugging things around – if I cant fit it in my pockets, then it stays at home hehehe
My two cents:
Get a high quality lightweight laptop. They’re ultra portable, and have all the bells and whistles you’ll want/need when you are blogging remotely. Mine goes everywhere with me, and is basically indispensable.

Nice. I also do mobile blogging, but i think simple mobile blogging is not much effective like mobile community blogging.
