Why I don’t Sleep: Blogging for Money isn’t Rocket Science!
- October 29th, 2008
If you’re like me and didn’t get a chance to catch a flight down to Florida for the most recent IZEAfest expo, I would highly suggest watching the recorded video of Big Money Bloggers. This is a panel of 4 top blogging moguls who have had great success personally and financially. John Chow, Jeremy Schoemaker, Stephanie Agresta, and Neil Patel made up the group. They answer questions ranging from biggest success to biggest failures. This video pretty much sums up all the reasons I can’t sleep at night.
While watching the video, I kept some brief notes and highlighted some of the key tips that I found useful.
- All four panelists had a common underlying theme when they began their blogs; none of them initially started with the intent of making it a big money maker. They started their blogs with intent to express their views, interests, or expertise in the hopes that others would find interest.
- Fun was also a common theme; a big key to the success of their blogs is that they didn’t find it a “job” to post.
- Being consistent with your blog is a must. Each panelist detailed the importance of staying consistent and posting on a frequent basis. Even in the beginning when you aren’t seem much fruit from your blog you need to keep positive and stay on top of writing on the focus of your site.
- Network, Network, Network. It was very clear that attending conferences such as this one are a must to becoming very successful. Meeting fellow bloggers and internet entrepreneurs is valuable in forming partnerships, not to mention a great way to have fun and learn new ideas. I’m sure you’ll find your own favorite points of interests in the video as well.
Making money blogging isn’t rocket science. It’s much more like art class. Find an “art” or topic that you are passionate about and start expressing your personal views, interests, and expertise. Stay positive, consistent, and have some passion. The monetary benefits will follow in due time!

Hi Rachel,
I have to totally agree with you, if you want to suceed in blogging you have to be in it for the long haul, do it as a hobby not just to make money, the money will come, but if its your only incentive your blog will fail.
I love the article! I couldn’t agree more that you need to find something that you love and enjoy…then it becomes fun and blogging is a piece of cake!
You have to blog about something you love, because its very boring writing about something you don´t like every single day..
Ha, ha… I couldn’t sleep either!
Don’t know what to blog about or just hate the topic?
There’s an easy solution to that: just hire a team of writers…
Blogging or working from home is still work. Most lose sight of that. Blogging about what you love without worrying about monetization is called a hobby. Blogger or blogspot could scratch that itch. Blogging for money takes work. Even though one may be at home, wearing PJ’s, able to catch-up on last night’s Tivo, but if they forget discipline, that is disastrous. Seems many people look for that easy life, hear stories of some lone blogger that suddenly goes viral. It takes off and the rest is history. For every one of those, there must be hundreds of thousands that go under discovered. Every blogger I know of who makes money online had to earn it. Just what Rachel posted- consistent posting over time, networking, in a word “work”.
As you say, Consistency is best when Blogging! I did not update my PR 1 Blog for about 3 weeks and my PR fell to 0
I have now abandanoned that blog but it is a good example for fellow bloggers!
What??? I do not get it…What is sleep? oh, I know, I gave up that terrible habit for raising my kids and working from home and let’s not forget to enjoy my life. Any business can consume your time and sometimes yourself. I like working online, a lot more flexibility and areas to make money.
Rachel, you have already a successful blog here. I have been following you a short time, but in that time you have posted wonderful post, your traffic is improving and maintaining a good solid increase.
Keep up the great work
Thanks for the great compliments. I hear you loud and clear on the mystery of sleep.
These are solid tips, I would add that participating in comments and replying to readers is very important, and the 50th comment is just as important as the 1st, this seems to be something the “big” bloggers forget!
I think all of your points are well said. Just blog because you want to, not because you need to. The rest will come along in time. Like myself, many have other projects going on and use their blogs to link to them and promote their newest web adventure. Eventually you get a nice following and people start to see what you are about.
